"Runaway" is a phenomenon unique to diesel engines. During runaway, the diesel engine speed becomes uncontrollable and accelerates rapidly, exceeding the maximum permissible speed, accompanied by a loud noise. In severe cases, engine components are damaged and rendered unusable.
There are two main causes of runaway: one is a malfunction in the fuel injection pump governor itself, causing it to lose its normal speed regulation characteristics; the other is the entry and combustion of extra diesel fuel or engine oil into the combustion chamber during engine operation.
Runaway occurs... "Immediate measures should be taken after the phenomenon occurs, otherwise an accident may occur when the engine speed is high enough. Emergency measures to stop speeding include: 1. Quickly return the accelerator (accelerator lever or accelerator pedal) to the parking position; 2. If there is a depressurization device, quickly pull the depressurization handle to the depressurization position; 3. Engage high gear in time, depress the brake pedal, and slowly release the clutch to increase the engine's resistance torque; 4. Quickly disconnect the high-pressure mixing pipe to stop the fuel supply; 5. Quickly wrap the air filter tightly with clothing to cut off the air supply to the engine. The above are referred to as the "five measures of deceleration, depressurization, braking, fuel cut-off, and air cut-off."
