1. Average power continues to increase. Whether for agricultural or industrial tractors, average power continues to increase to improve the productivity of individual machines, although the rate of increase is slowing down. North America and the Soviet Union, with their large land area and small populations, have large-scale agricultural production, and therefore mostly use large agricultural implements equipped with corresponding high-power tractors. In most developing countries, small and medium-power tractors still dominate, but their average power is also continuously increasing.
2. Wheeled tractors hold an absolute advantage in agricultural tractors. Tracked tractors are no longer widely used in agricultural production in many countries. In the Soviet Union, Italy, and China, although some tracked tractors are still in use, their proportion is declining. In industrial tractors, especially bulldozers and excavators, tracked tractors still hold an absolute advantage. With the increase in tractor power, four-wheel drive tractors have developed rapidly. The application of hydraulic steering systems can solve the steering difficulties of this type of tractor, and articulated steering can greatly reduce the turning radius. These factors further promote the development of high-power four-wheel drive tractors. To improve traction and maneuverability in paddy fields, four-wheel drive variants of small and medium-power wheeled tractors have seen rapid development in countries like Japan.
3. Tractor safety, ease of operation, and working environment comfort are receiving increasing attention. Well-designed and manufactured cabs and instruments not only improve driver working conditions and ensure safety but also increase labor productivity and work quality.
4. The serialization, generalization, and standardization of tractors and their components are important measures to facilitate production, use, reduce manufacturing costs, and simplify parts supply. To meet the diverse needs of the tractor market with fewer basic models, major tractor companies in Europe and America produce one or several series of products. In countries like the Soviet Union, there are nationally unified tractor series catalogs to guide product development in various factories. Developing basic tractor models with two or more power levels and certain organic connections, along with their corresponding variants, to form a series of products allows for a high degree of commonality in components, thereby increasing the production volume of common components; or enabling the production of similar parts on the same processing line and the assembly of similar components and adjacent tractor classes on the same assembly line. This is highly beneficial for fully utilizing production capacity and reducing production costs.
5. The application of hydraulic technology in tractors is becoming increasingly widespread. In modern tractors, especially large tractors, almost all major components are operated using hydraulic devices, such as the clutch, power shift of the gearbox, differential lock, brakes, and steering mechanism. On some tractors, seat adjustment and window opening/closing also use hydraulic devices. Electro-hydraulic controlled suspension systems have been adopted on some tractors. Due to the convenience of the control switch layout, the hydraulic lines can be shortened accordingly, and this system will be more widely used on large tractors.
6. Long-term exposure to random alternating loads on certain tractor components can cause fatigue damage, affecting the tractor's reliability and lifespan. To further improve product quality, large tractor companies have invested significant funds and manpower in obtaining load spectra of parts under various operating conditions, organizing simulation tests and stress analyses, and developing computer software for optimization design based on the accumulation of large amounts of experimental data. This not only improves product quality but also shortens the development cycle of new products. Advanced tractor manufacturers have already applied computer-aided design (CAD) methods for product design. The research and application of optimization design are also receiving increasing attention.
