Agricultural tractor differential and differential lock
Differential Function: When a wheeled tractor turns, the inner and outer drive wheels travel different distances. If the inner and outer drive wheels rotate at the same speed, the inner wheel will slip relative to the road surface, and the outer wheel will slip relative to the road surface, creating a large additional steering resistance torque, making the tractor difficult to turn and increasing tire wear. Furthermore, due to the imperfectly equal inner tube pressure, different tire tread wear, and different vertical loads on the drive wheels, the rolling radii of the left and right drive wheels will not be exactly equal; if the speeds of both drive wheels are the same, the drive wheels will also slip or slide when the tractor travels in a straight line, increasing tire wear and engine power consumption. Therefore, a differential is installed between the left and right drive wheels. It allows the left and right half-shafts and the left and right drive wheels to rotate at different speeds when transmitting power to the left and right half-shafts.
The differential can not only be used for speed difference between the left and right drive wheels, but also for torque distribution between axles in multi-axle tractors, avoiding parasitic power that may occur in multi-axle tractors.
The locking coefficient of a simple gear differential is approximately 1.1 to 1.35. Therefore, when the tractor's traction condition of one drive wheel is poor, the tractor may get stuck. To overcome this drawback, a differential lock can be added to the simple gear differential. The differential lock either interlocks the half-shaft gears with the differential housing, or interlocks the left and right half-shafts (or the left and right drive shafts), causing the differential to lose its differential function. The left and right drive wheels then exert tangential forces according to their respective traction properties. The sum of these tangential forces increases, improving the tractor's traction and maneuverability.
The differential lock has a simple structure and reliable locking operation, but timely engagement and disengagement are crucial during use.
