Electrical and accessory systems for agricultural tractors
The simplest electrical system consists only of an alternator, lights, switches, and wiring, such as the electrical systems of hand-held tractors and some small four-wheeled tractors in my country. To ensure the safety of the implement during operation, at least indicators or alarms for engine oil pressure and water temperature should be present; when operating on roads, brake pressure indicators and turn signal lights should also be included. The main problem with this type of simple electrical system is that, due to the use of inexpensive permanent magnet alternators, the system lacks a voltage regulator, resulting in unstable supply voltage that varies with alternator speed and load.
A more complete electrical system should include a starter, battery, alternator, and a corresponding voltage regulator; to allow the driver to monitor the operating status of key components at all times, the instrument and monitoring system should generally include an engine tachometer, hour meter, water temperature gauge, fuel gauge, oil pressure gauge or oil pressure alarm, as well as other alarms and signal indicators; the lighting system should not only include headlights to illuminate the road ahead but also work lights for the implements, as well as turn signals, brake signals, and cab lighting, enabling the tractor to work at night. Auxiliary electrical components should include at least switches, wiring harnesses, relays, flashers, horns, and circuit fuses.

With the development of tractor technology, power output has increased, and the number of electrical devices has grown, thus requiring a corresponding increase in generator power. Therefore, the power-to-weight ratio is typically 180-280 W/kg. Thin-plate, one-piece-cover plastic batteries, which have emerged in recent years, are characterized by their small size and large capacity. The vibration-type electromagnetic regulator, which has been used for decades, will gradually be replaced by transistor-type and integrated circuit regulators. Integrated regulators are not only small and high-performing but can also be installed on the generator's rear cover, becoming an integral part of the generator. The development trend of starters is also towards increasing power-to-weight ratio, with more and more low-power starters adopting reduction gear types.

With the increase in the number and power of electrical devices used in tractors, combination switch structures have emerged, and various relays have been adopted. The application of combination switches reduces the number of switches and facilitates operation. The application of relays reduces the load on switch contacts and extends the service life of the switches.

Instrumentation and monitoring systems are evolving towards electronic and modular designs, with mechanical instruments gradually being phased out. Some indicating instruments are being replaced by signal alarms and warning lights, and multiple indicator lights are used to indicate the working position or status of certain parts of the tractor.

In foreign luxury high-power tractors, there are also air-conditioned cabs equipped with digital instruments, computer monitoring systems, digital clocks, radios, cigarette lighters, etc.
